Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that he sent a letter to Vladimir Putin to learn Russia’s reaction to the EU’s decision on using frozen Russian assets. According to him, the response indicated that Russia’s reaction “would be strong,” but the views of individual EU states would be taken into account.

Orbán emphasized that Hungary does not support the use of these assets, calling it “a new level of escalation.”
He also posted on the social media platform X, claiming that the EU allegedly “deprived Hungary of its rights” and violated the principle of “loyal cooperation” in the sanctions debate. Because of this, according to him, Hungary will no longer consider the EU’s decision binding.
