Ukrainians’ willingness to compromise on issues related to ending the war, including territorial matters, varies significantly by region.

According to the sociological group “Rating,” western regions of the country show greater firmness against any concessions, with the prevailing position being “fight to the end.” In contrast, eastern and frontline regions, where shelling and drone attacks are experienced daily, show a growing demand for a cessation of hostilities.
Overall, about two-thirds of Ukrainians believe the war can only be ended through diplomatic means, while roughly one-third hold a stricter position—restoring borders to those of 1991 or 2022.
Approximately 80% of citizens consider negotiations a realistic way to end the war: 60% support talks involving international partners, around 20% favor direct dialogue with Russia, and over 10% advocate continuing the war until all territories are fully liberated.
Oleksiy Antypovych emphasizes that support for negotiations does not necessarily mean readiness to make specific concessions. The most sensitive issue for Ukrainians remains territory: they are not willing to recognize occupied lands as Russian or to relinquish areas controlled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the same time, if no alternatives exist, society will have to make difficult compromise decisions.
