Sanctions against the fifth president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, including the freezing of assets and a ban on capital withdrawal, were introduced amid increasing political activity and the upcoming elections, writes CNN. Poroshenko, who leads the largest opposition party in parliament, accused the Ukrainian president of politically motivated actions.

Meanwhile, the introduction of sanctions coincides with the intensifying political struggle in Ukraine due to the upcoming elections, particularly following US President Donald Trump’s statements on the need to end the war with Russia. However, under martial law, elections are prohibited in Ukraine, and President Zelensky’s mandate was supposed to end in May of the previous year.
The sanctions have been criticized by Poroshenko’s domestic allies and international politicians. Carl Bildt, former Prime Minister of Sweden, pointed out that imposing sanctions on Poroshenko would appear as political revenge, especially since Zelensky also had business dealings with Russia in the past.
