According to her, the international order has undergone changes that are “not only radical but also permanent.” “We now live in a world where strict power prevails,” von der Leyen emphasized.
She highlighted that Europe needs to accelerate its move toward independence and gain new levers of influence to protect its own interests. Commenting on tensions in relations with the U.S., including President Donald Trump’s statements on potential tariffs and the position on Greenland, von der Leyen said that “the threat of additional tariffs on security grounds is simply wrong.”
European leaders plan to meet on January 22 to discuss a possible response to U.S. statements. “Europe prefers dialogue and finding solutions, but we are fully ready to act if necessary, with unity, urgency, and determination,” the EC president concluded.
