According to sources, the decision to replace special envoy Steve Witkoff could be made ahead of the meeting between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, which is planned to take place in Budapest.
The United States intends to hold a series of preliminary contacts with the Russian side, and the possible appointment of Rubio as the chief negotiator has been positively received in Kyiv and European capitals.
The publication notes that Trump’s team seeks to strengthen diplomatic leverage ahead of the summit to avoid a repeat of the situation when the previous meeting with Putin in August was widely described as “a victory for Moscow.”
