The United States, together with the Philippines, has launched the largest-scale defense exercises in the Indo-Pacific region.

This highlights the strategic importance of Washington’s military presence in the region amid countering China and rising global tensions, Bloomberg reports.
The exercises, named “Balikatan,” involve a record number of personnel this year — more than 17,000 troops. Participants include the United States, the Philippines, as well as allies such as Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and France. The program includes naval maneuvers and live-fire drills.
It is reported that the start of the exercises came shortly after China deployed warships for its own maneuvers in the western Pacific. At the same time, Japan joined these exercises for the first time.
During the opening, U.S. representatives emphasized the importance of the region and support for allies. In particular, Washington stated that despite other global challenges, U.S. attention to the Indo-Pacific region remains steady.
Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi also plans to observe part of the exercises, including ship-sinking drills.
Bloomberg notes that the expanded maneuvers are taking place amid a new wave of geopolitical tensions, including the conflict in the Middle East, which is affecting global oil prices and economic stability in Asia. Tensions between the U.S., China, and regional allies also persist.
The Philippine side stressed that the expansion of the exercises is part of a shared goal to maintain a “free and open Indo-Pacific” and is not directed against any specific country.
