In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s calls to stop purchasing Russian oil, the European Union expressed support for plans to phase out imports of energy resources from Russia. EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen stated that the EU is negotiating a gradual cessation of Russian oil and gas purchases by the end of 2027.

Trump emphasized that European countries must stop buying Russian oil to avoid financing Russia’s war against Ukraine. Jørgensen added that the U.S. did not pressure the EU regarding the timeline, but Trump’s support would be a welcome help in achieving this goal. According to the EU, imports of Russian gas will drop this year to about 13% of Europe’s needs, compared to 45% before Russia’s invasion in 2022.
Some countries, including Hungary and Slovakia, continue imports through the Druzhba pipeline and oppose the gradual phase-out plan. Jørgensen stated that the EU can make decisions by majority vote rather than unanimously and is negotiating with governments to address their concerns. Next week, he will discuss with the U.S. an agreement to purchase American energy resources worth $250 billion per year.
