Hungarian opposition politician Péter Magyar, who is considered the main rival of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, may not become a pro-Ukrainian alternative for the European Union. His position on Ukraine on a number of issues aligns with the rhetoric of the current government.

Journalists note that despite expectations from European leaders regarding a shift in Budapest’s policy, Magyar’s statements often echo Orbán’s stance. In particular, the politician opposes Ukraine’s rapid accession to the European Union and does not support supplying weapons to Kyiv.
He also insists that the issue of Ukraine’s membership should be decided through a referendum, and his party “Tisza” voted against a financial aid package for Ukraine in the European Parliament.
“No one wants a pro-Ukrainian government,” Péter Magyar said.
The politician emphasizes that he will act “in the interests of Budapest” and criticizes Ukraine for “violating the rights of the Hungarian minority.” During a public discussion between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Viktor Orbán regarding an EU loan, Magyar supported the Hungarian prime minister’s position.

According to journalists, critical attitudes toward Ukraine are widespread in Hungary:
64% of citizens oppose Ukraine’s accession to the EU;
74% do not support providing financial aid to Ukraine.
Against this backdrop, Magyar speaks cautiously about Ukraine, as open support could negatively affect his political rating.
