Machado received the award for her fight for the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for promoting a peaceful transition of the country from dictatorship to democracy.
At the same time, according to U.S. media reports, Donald Trump expected to receive the prize this year for his diplomatic initiatives.
Trump’s campaign communications director, Steven Chung, stated on social media platform X that the Nobel Committee’s decision reflects political bias:
“The Nobel Committee has once again shown that politics matters more to them than peace. President Trump will continue to broker peace agreements, end wars, and save lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and no one can match his willpower,” Chung wrote.
The reaction from Trump’s team sparked a lively debate in the U.S. and abroad about the influence of politics on the selection of Nobel Peace Prize laureates.
