Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that Moscow is trying to restore its control over the country by promoting Kremlin-loyal figures to key government positions, Omniapres reports.

According to Sandu, Russia currently “cannot reach Moldova” because Ukraine continues to resist aggression, but the political and strategic risk remains high. “Moscow seeks to place its people in key institutions so that they follow the Kremlin’s directives rather than act in the interests of our citizens,” she emphasized.
The president noted that similar attempts at influence were already observed during previous elections, when the Kremlin tried to establish control over power in Chișinău in order to use Moldova against Ukraine, Romania, and other countries in the region.
Sandu warned that if Russian control strengthens, Moldova could turn into a “gray zone” — a territory vulnerable to money laundering, corruption schemes, and security threats along the border with Ukraine.
