Amid the ongoing war, Ukraine is intensifying pressure on the opposition, while opposition politicians call for national unity, writes the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in the article “Without a Prospect for Peace.”

The publication notes that the authorities are imposing sanctions on opposition politicians, restricting deputies’ travel, and removing mayors and governors who do not support the government. In February, extrajudicial sanctions were applied against Petro Poroshenko, leader of the “European Solidarity” party.
The newspaper emphasizes that Ukraine is entering the fourth winter of the war without a real prospect of ending the hostilities, as Russian air and missile attacks on civilian targets continue. Since Donald Trump’s presidency in the U.S., Russia has significantly expanded military operations. No negotiations or pressure from Trump led to peace, even after Kyiv agreed to an unconditional ceasefire and readiness for temporary concessions on occupied territories.
Journalists note that the Zelensky government understands the key role of the U.S. in restraining Putin, but its constant reliance on allies masks internal political weakness. The authorities are using strict measures, which are partly justified during wartime, but also carry significance for postwar political control.
At the same time, the opposition calls for unity, supports the government’s actions, and proposes combining the best resources and forces to counter the external threat, which poses an existential danger to Ukraine, the publication concludes.
