In Ukraine, men over the age of 60 are not subject to mandatory mobilization, but they may join the Armed Forces of Ukraine only under a contract and strictly on a voluntary basis. This was reported by the Sumy Regional Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center.

The TCC emphasizes that information about the alleged “mandatory mobilization of pensioners” is false. The legislation provides for service of older citizens only on a voluntary basis after signing a contract.
At the same time, such candidates are primarily considered for roles in technical, organizational, and training units, where experience and professional skills are important.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine note that there is currently high demand for specialists in logistics, equipment repair, transport, communications, and personnel training. Former servicemen, reserve officers, and instructors are also in demand.
The TCC stresses that men over 60 are usually not involved in assault or frontline combat operations — they are more often assigned to rear units, training centers, or administrative structures.
To sign a contract, it is necessary to undergo a military medical commission, receive a fitness assessment, and obtain approval from a military unit. In some cases, a decision from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is also required.
The contract is usually concluded for a period of one year with the possibility of extension, and candidates are also subject to a probation period.
