According to von der Leyen, the talks focused on strengthening economic pressure on Russia. She emphasized that the European Commission will soon present the 19th sanctions package, targeting the banking sector, cryptocurrencies, and energy.
Von der Leyen stressed that the EU proposal will include an accelerated phased-out of Russian fossil fuel imports.
Previously, the European Union planned to completely stop purchasing Russian oil and gas by January 1, 2028. However, in light of Russia’s war against Ukraine and growing U.S. pressure, Brussels may shorten these timelines.
Donald Trump, for his part, is demanding more decisive action from the EU: from imposing strict tariffs on goods from India and China to a complete halt of energy purchases from Russia.
