U.S. President Donald Trump called on the Republican Party to take control of the electoral process and “nationalize voting” ahead of the midterm elections scheduled for this year. According to him, Republicans should assume control over elections in at least 15 states.

The statement was made amid an FBI search of the election office in Fulton County, Georgia — a region that has long been at the center of Trump’s claims about alleged fraud in the 2020 election. The search was related to actions by the U.S. Department of Justice to seize election documents and look for possible violations.
Trump again stated that a number of states are “corrupt” and miscount votes, claiming that he won in places where official results showed otherwise. He also suggested that developments in Georgia could lead to the emergence of “interesting facts” after ballots are examined.
U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard confirmed that she acted on direct instructions from the president and visited Atlanta in connection with the investigation. According to media reports, she even connected Trump by phone with FBI agents during the search.
Midterm elections in the United States are traditionally considered a kind of “confidence referendum” on the sitting president. During them, all members of the House of Representatives, part of the Senate, and a number of governors are elected. Formally, elections are conducted by the states, and the role of the federal government is limited.
At the same time, Trump has already taken steps to change election rules. Last year, he signed an executive order requiring mandatory confirmation of U.S. citizenship for voter registration and banning the counting of mail-in ballots received after Election Day. Part of the document was blocked by a federal court.
The U.S. president has also stated his intention to ban voting by mail and the use of voting machines, although the corresponding executive order was never signed. In addition, the White House has launched a campaign to redraw electoral districts, which could give Republicans additional seats.
Against this background, the U.S. Department of Justice has filed lawsuits against more than two dozen states demanding that they provide complete voter lists, citing risks of illegal migrants participating in elections. In response, Democratic officials have already stated that they are preparing for possible federal government interference in the electoral process.
