He wrote about this on social media, emphasizing that the relevant decision could be made in the near future.
“The United States is studying and considering the possibility of reducing the number of troops in Germany, and a decision will be made soon,” Trump stated.
The announcement came after criticism from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who said there was no clear U.S. strategy regarding the situation with Iran and expressed concerns about U.S. actions.
On April 29, Merz noted that his relations with Trump remain stable, but he voiced doubts about the U.S. approach to the Iran conflict.
During his previous presidency, Trump had already initiated a reduction of the U.S. military contingent in Germany. In 2020, he announced a plan to withdraw about 9,500 troops out of approximately 34,500, but the process was not implemented. In 2021, the Joe Biden administration halted those plans.
Currently, Germany hosts key elements of U.S. military infrastructure, including Ramstein Air Base and a major medical center in Landstuhl.
Against this backdrop, tensions between Washington and Berlin have increased. Trump also publicly criticized Merz’s statements on Iran, accusing him of misunderstanding the situation and stating that Germany’s economic problems are linked to its political decisions.
