U.S. President Donald Trump halted preparations for a forceful seizure of Greenland after members of Congress warned him of their readiness to launch impeachment proceedings. This forced the White House administration to urgently de-escalate tensions and abandon the introduction of tariffs against European allies.

This was stated on the air of “Pryamyi” by political analyst Oleh Saakian. According to him, American lawmakers were actively in contact with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other high-ranking officials, demanding that aggressive intentions regarding Greenland be stopped.

Saakian emphasized that this became the first case in which Congress offered Donald Trump real resistance. Although the confrontation took place mostly behind the scenes, the parliament managed to change the president’s position on an issue where he was ready to go all the way.

According to the political analyst’s assessment, more than 80% of American voters opposed the forceful annexation of Greenland, seeing no sense in it. Big business also joined the opposition, as customs wars with Europe began to cause tangible damage to the U.S. economy.

When European partners moved to symmetrical anti-coercive measures, the pressure on the White House became critical. As a result, the system of checks and balances worked, protecting the role of Congress, Saakian concluded.

Earlier, Western media reported that the U.S. administration had abandoned the forceful scenario regarding Greenland precisely because of the risk of announcing impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump. According to Reuters, since early January the president and his entourage had repeatedly mentioned the possibility of using force.

At the same time, Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte agreed on a framework agreement to strengthen security in the Arctic with a focus on Greenland. It предусматриває the expansion of NATO’s presence, the deployment of U.S. missiles, and economic cooperation in the field of mineral extraction.
