On December 30, the US Department of the Treasury announced the lifting of sanctions against Oleksandra Buriko, who previously served as the CFO of the Russian “Sberbank.”

According to US officials, Buriko no longer works at the bank and has demonstrated that the circumstances under which she was added to the sanctions list in May 2022 are no longer relevant.
“This sanctions removal was carried out as part of the regular administrative procedure of OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) in response to a petition for review. OFAC has the authority not only to impose sanctions but also to lift them in accordance with the law,” the US Treasury noted.
Buriko filed a lawsuit against the US Treasury in December 2024, arguing that she severed ties with Sberbank shortly after the sanctions were imposed and that remaining on the list is unlawful. The court case is ongoing, but the parties are negotiating a settlement.
