U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated that the United States is already effectively ensuring the defense of Greenland and therefore should take part in the distribution of its natural resources, given the island’s strategic importance.

He said this in an interview with the Newsmax television channel after U.S. President Donald Trump announced the creation of a “framework” for a future agreement on Greenland.

According to Vance, the United States is protecting a territory with large reserves of minerals and resources and therefore has the right to participate in their use. He emphasized that it is American military power, not Denmark’s, that deters potential aggression from Russia or China in the Arctic region.

Donald Trump previously reported that the new framework agreement provides for U.S. and European allies’ access to mineral extraction in Greenland, as well as cooperation in missile defense within the “Golden Shield” system.

Vance stressed that control over the Arctic is of key importance to U.S. national security, in particular for the stability of the missile defense system in the event of potential intercontinental missile threats.

He also dismissed criticism from European leaders, stating that public statements do not reflect real private negotiations. According to him, the Trump administration is acting from a position of realism rather than hostility toward Europe, calling on allies to take greater care of their own security.
