According to available information, the Hungarian authorities are using the loan issue and the general confrontation with the European Union as a political tool ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12. The EU believes that Orbán’s current position is driven by electoral considerations.
Diplomats note that Hungary has become more unpredictable than usual. Despite harsh public rhetoric, Orbán has rarely blocked final agreements in the past, but risks to his political future may influence his further tactics.
Among the possible options to bypass the Hungarian veto are mechanisms provided for by EU treaties, including suspending voting rights or freezing funding. At the same time, such measures could intensify Orbán’s pre-election rhetoric and require a long time to implement.
