The European Union is considering banning the import of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) starting January 1, 2027, a year earlier than planned under the 19th sanctions package against Russia, Reuters reports.

According to sources, the decision is linked to pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who demands that European countries completely abandon Russian energy resources. If such a ban is adopted, the EU will have to compensate for the supply shortfall by increasing imports of American gas, which would make Europe more dependent on Washington.
Currently, Russian LNG is supplied to France, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands, while pipeline gas via the “Turkish Stream” reaches Slovakia, Hungary, and Bulgaria.
In addition to gas restrictions, the new sanctions package includes measures against Russia’s shadow tanker fleet, cryptocurrencies, Russian and Central Asian banks, Chinese refineries, and certain economic zones.
