In light of recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a possible U.S. withdrawal from NATO and the use of American influence to pressure European states, Europe is increasingly discussing its own defense capabilities.

The Swedish publication Dagens Nyheter notes that Northern Europe may need its own nuclear capability to strengthen regional security. The combination of Sweden’s advanced expertise in nuclear energy and its developed defense industry makes the country a key participant in this process.
At the same time, other countries such as Spain and Italy may provide support, but the main responsibility, according to experts, should fall on Sweden. Meanwhile, not all states are ready to spend 3.5% of GDP on defense, so those that are able to do so should take on a greater role.
Dagens Nyheter emphasizes that a joint nuclear capability for Northern Europe, possibly involving Germany, could deter the spread of nuclear weapons among other states. Discussion of these issues is particularly relevant against the backdrop of U.S. policy: if the United States does not provide security guarantees for Europe, the region needs its own protection mechanisms.
