The charges include embezzlement, influence peddling, corruption in business operations, and misappropriation of funds. The court must now decide whether she will stand trial.
The investigation began in April 2024. Investigators are examining whether Gómez used her position as the prime minister’s wife to obtain a post at the prestigious Complutense University of Madrid, where she led a master’s program in business studies. The judge noted that she lacks the relevant qualifications.
The complaint against Gómez was filed by anti-corruption activists “Manos Limpias” (“Clean Hands”), led by Miguel Bernad, who is linked to far-right circles. In the past, this organization has repeatedly filed lawsuits against politicians that did not proceed in court.
Begoña Gómez denies the allegations, while Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has stated that the case is politically motivated and an attempt by the opposition to undermine his coalition.
