Moscow and Beijing attempted to block the discussion, but the proposal was rejected with 11 votes. Two more countries abstained.
US Ambassador Michael Waltz stated that the current sanctions include an embargo on arms supplies, a ban on the transfer of missile technologies, and the freezing of Iran’s assets. According to him, Russia and China are blocking the creation of the committee in order to support their partner.
He also emphasized that the IAEA confirmed that Iran is producing and accumulating uranium enriched to 60%, without full access for international inspectors.
Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya, in response, accused the United States of fueling “hysteria” and preparing new military actions against Tehran.
Chinese representative Fu Cong called Washington’s actions an incitement of the crisis and a disruption of diplomatic efforts. Meanwhile, Iran’s Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani stated that the country’s nuclear program “has always been peaceful,” and that Tehran does not recognize attempts to impose new sanctions.
