🛡️ Romania’s Defence Minister called on the EU to regroup its forces due to the threat of Russian drones

🛡️ Міністр оборони Румунії закликав ЄС перегрупувати сили через загрозу російських дронів

Romania’s Defence Minister, Radu Miruță, has said there is a need to regroup the European Union’s defence capabilities in order to more effectively protect against Russian drones, which regularly violate the airspace of NATO countries. He made the statement ahead of the EU Security Council meeting on May 12.

According to Miruță, Russian drones have repeatedly been detected in the airspace of Romania and other countries on NATO’s eastern flank.

“While in the centre of the continent these Russian attacks are not felt the same as on the periphery, we are facing the fact that several times a month drones enter the European airspace of NATO and Romania,” he noted.

The minister stressed that the issue is systemic and affects the entire eastern flank of the Alliance.

“It is quite clear that within the European Union we must regroup our forces and capabilities in order to reduce this type of violations. The capabilities that countries have must be combined to counter these Russian drones,” Miruță emphasized.

He also said that since the beginning of 2026, 14 cases of airspace violations by drones over Romania have been recorded.

According to him, EU defence resources should be more evenly distributed between regions, as eastern flank countries face a higher level of threats.
