Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spoke out against the close integration of Ukraine into the European Union, noting that Hungarians do not wish to “share Ukraine’s difficult fate” due to its proximity to Russia. His remarks were reported by Kossuth Radio.

Orbán explained that being part of a federal or closely allied structure involves shared risks, including military conflicts. “If you are in a federal system with someone, you share their fate, and Ukraine is a country with a very difficult fate. Why should we share this difficult fate?” he said.
At the same time, the Hungarian prime minister emphasized that Hungary is ready to support Ukraine, but not to take on risks or obligations that could lead to losses. “We feel sorry for them, we sympathize with them, they are fighting heroically, we must support them, but we do not want a shared fate with them,” Orbán added.
He also noted that he does not want Hungarians to be in a situation where they would have to send soldiers “to die for Ukraine” in the event of closer integration or federal ties with Kyiv.
