Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s call to stop purchasing Russian oil, saying it would devastate Hungary’s economy, Bloomberg reports.

The phone conversation between the leaders took place after the White House’s statement on the need to reduce imports of Russian energy resources. In response, Orban told journalists that giving up Russian oil is unacceptable for Budapest, since the country has no access to the sea.
“We don’t need to accept each other’s arguments. We must clearly speak about our interests and listen to one another as friends, and then each acts in their own way,” Orban said, commenting on the talk with Trump.
He stressed that the Hungarian government will focus solely on its own economic interests and will not take directives from the U.S. administration.
According to Orban, abandoning pipeline oil and gas supplies from Russia could lead to a 4% decline in Hungary’s economy.
