Reasons for the decision

In Chișinău, officials stated that the CIS has lost its original purpose, and its core principles are no longer upheld.

“The fundamental values and principles of the CIS are no longer observed, and the organization itself has lost its reason for existence,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The main argument for denouncing the agreements was Russia’s actions, which, according to Moldova, violate international law principles. This includes:

EU integration course

The denouncement of the agreements is seen as part of Moldova’s path toward European Union integration.

Chișinău also noted that exiting the CIS will allow the country to reduce state expenditures by approximately 3.1 million lei per year (over 150,000 euros).

What happens next

After denouncing the agreements, relations with CIS member states will continue in bilateral and multilateral formats. At the same time, Moldova will remain a participant in several CIS agreements, including in trade-economic and social areas.

So far, the country has already denounced about 70 agreements as part of the gradual alignment of national policy and modernization of legislation according to EU standards.
