Since 2022, more than 120,000 Ukrainians have received temporary protection in Ireland, 83,000 of whom still remain in the country. According to statistics, around 50 new arrivals come every day, putting pressure on the housing system.
Government representatives warn that available housing may run out as early as this month. Therefore, options are being considered to introduce a limited period of accommodation and financial contributions from those who are employed.
Weekly contributions are expected to range from €15 to €238, depending on income level. Implementation of the new system may take between 9 and 12 months.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan emphasized:
“If the influx of arrivals continues to grow as it did in September and October, we will have to look for new housing options.”
The Irish government aims to maintain a balance between humanitarian support and the country’s real capacities amid the increasing number of Ukrainian refugees.
