India has asked the United States to extend a special permit allowing imports of Russian oil, which is set to expire on May 16. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the situation.

According to the publication, the Indian side is justifying its request by the need to ensure stable energy supplies amid increased volatility in global markets. In particular, it concerns risks to the domestic fuel market and gas supplies for household use.
“Indian officials warned the United States that supply remains a priority due to instability in the oil market, which has broad consequences, including for the population,” Bloomberg notes.
The United States previously approved an exemption for India in March and later extended it until May 16, in an effort to curb rising global oil prices.
At the same time, Washington has previously urged India to reduce purchases of Russian oil in order to increase economic pressure on Russia over the war against Ukraine, although these supplies are not formally subject to general sanctions.
