According to the organizers, the incident occurred near the coast of Tunisia in the Mediterranean Sea. The vessel Family Boat, with six activists on board, was hit and caught fire. The blaze damaged the main deck and storage areas, but the crew remained unharmed.
“Acts of aggression aimed at intimidating us and disrupting our mission will not stop us,” representatives of the flotilla stated.
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg confirmed the incident and emphasized that the main goal of the journey is to draw attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza. “This story is not about our journey, but about Palestine, about how people are deliberately deprived of the basic means of survival. And about how the world remains silent,” she said.
At the same time, Tunisian authorities denied the version of a drone attack. A representative of the country’s National Guard told AFP that “no drone was detected,” and a preliminary inspection showed that the explosion occurred inside the vessel. The investigation is ongoing.
