French prosecutors have summoned Elon Musk for a voluntary interview as part of an investigation into the social network X and the operation of the artificial intelligence Grok. The suspicions concern that AI features may have contributed to the spread of millions of sexualized deepfakes. It is currently unknown whether the businessman will appear for questioning.

The investigation in France began in January 2025. Initially, it concerned the possible use of X algorithms to influence political processes in France. Later, the case was expanded — it also included an examination of the alleged dissemination by the Grok chatbot of content that includes Holocaust denial and the creation of sexualized deepfakes.

In February, French authorities had already issued a summons to Elon Musk. The then-CEO of X, Linda Yaccarino, was also called in for questioning as officials responsible for the platform at the time of the events. Musk then called these actions a “political attack.”

After that, French investigators conducted searches at X’s office in Paris. The company stated that these actions were “politicized” and called them an “abuse of legal procedure.” The Paris prosecutor’s office emphasized that failure to appear for a voluntary interview would not hinder the ongoing investigation, and that the time and place of the interview are not disclosed.

It is also noted that the case is being considered amid broader international criticism of Grok. According to the Center for Countering Digital Hate, over 11 days users may have created around three million sexualized images, mostly of women, as well as thousands involving children, using simple text prompts.
