Russian occupiers are step by step implementing their criminal and dangerous plan to restart the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. In particular, this is evidenced by the construction of energy infrastructure in the area of the ZNPP.

This was reported by activists from “Greenpeace Ukraine,” who analyzed data from satellite images. They noted that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its director Rafael Grossi are turning a blind eye to the aggressor’s crimes, which significantly increase the nuclear threat to the whole world.
For the first time, it became known from satellite images published on May 27 that Russia is building a power line between the occupied Mariupol and Melitopol. Since then, the occupiers have made significant progress in this direction:
Since May 6, 11 new power poles have been installed west of the occupied village of Azovske in Zaporizhzhia region, covering an additional total distance of 3.6 km south of the occupied village of Shevchenko in Zaporizhzhia region;
- From May 22 to June 3, another 10 poles were installed at the eastern end of the line, covering a distance of 3.3 km south of the occupied Kliuchove in Donetsk region.
“Greenpeace Ukraine” has no doubt about russia’s intention to illegally restart the Zaporizhzhia NPP, disconnect it from the Ukrainian power system, and synchronize it with the Russian power system,” the organization emphasizes.
Activists stress that despite IAEA Director Rafael Grossi’s disagreement with the threat of a potential restart of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, the russians are openly talking about their criminal plans.
“A comprehensive, multi-level plan for the phased commissioning of the nuclear power plant has been prepared. The plan is now being agreed upon… within the government, the Ministry of Energy, in cooperation with the grid operator,” said Rosatom head Alexey Likhachov at a meeting with Grossi on June 6.
Senior nuclear campaigner of Greenpeace Ukraine, Sean Burnie, stressed that the restart of the ZNPP cannot happen in a day or a month — it requires systematic preparation. This is confirmed by new power lines and a pumping station in the occupied Ukrainian territories.
“Greenpeace Ukraine signals to the IAEA and Rafael Grossi that these preparations are already underway, but the IAEA for some reason does not see these signals. We emphasize that the ZNPP is exclusively Ukrainian property, and its restart by the russians is a crime against international law with potentially catastrophic consequences for people and nature,” Burnie says.
Greenpeace warned that the restart of the ZNPP carries very serious nuclear safety risks and may provoke radioactive contamination. In particular, because during the 3 years of occupation, the ZNPP equipment has become worn out, and the plant lacks experienced personnel.
