German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that the reinstatement of military conscription could become an important element in deterring Russia’s aggressive actions.

“If we once again implement conscription for all men of a certain age and collect data on those fit for service, it will be noticed in Russia. And that will serve as a deterrent factor,” Pistorius emphasized.
He also explained that in the event of declaring a “state of defense,” conscription — which was abolished in 2011 — would be immediately reinstated in accordance with the constitution.
According to the minister, the Bundeswehr is working on creating new modern structures, and by mid-2027, the country will be ready to reintroduce nationwide military conscription.
