A representative of the Chinese government stated that Beijing “will absolutely not renounce” the option of using force against Taiwan if it becomes necessary for “reunification.” The comment came amid a series of state media articles promising “benevolent governance” after the island comes under Chinese control.

Spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, Peng Qinen, emphasized that the “one country, two systems” model remains the basic approach to resolving the Taiwan issue. “We are ready to create ample room for peaceful reunification, but we will absolutely not give up the use of force,” he said.
Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te responded that the island must demonstrate determination in defending its independence. “Taiwan must resist annexation, aggression, and any attempts to impose unification,” he stressed.
Despite the tough rhetoric, senior Chinese official Wang Huning did not mention the use of force in his recent speech, focusing instead on the advantages of “peaceful reunification.” Meanwhile, Taipei rejected Beijing’s proposals for autonomy under the Hong Kong or Macau model.
The statements came ahead of the anticipated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Trump noted that he is “not sure” whether the Taiwan issue will be raised during the talks but said Washington is closely monitoring Beijing’s rhetoric.
