According to the investigation, Shevchenko maintained ties for several years with Belarusian officials, businessmen, and the country’s self-proclaimed president, spreading disinformation claiming there was “no threat from Belarus.” His media appearances and interviews with pro-Russian bloggers were later featured on Russian propaganda outlets. Even after Russia’s full-scale invasion, the politician continued promoting narratives about the “collapse of the Ukrainian state” and called for negotiations with Moscow “under any conditions.”
In addition, investigators found that the MP organized a fraudulent scheme involving the supply of mineral fertilizers. After a Ukrainian company paid for goods detained by Belarusian authorities, Shevchenko forced it to sign a contract with a firm under his control worth 14.5 million UAH. He then used the funds to purchase three luxury cars — a Porsche, a BMW, and a Mercedes — registered under proxy individuals.
Shevchenko is charged with state treason and fraud, offenses punishable by up to life imprisonment with property confiscation. He is currently in custody, and the Office of the Prosecutor General is overseeing the case.
