📆 Earlier, in January, the team of then-President Joe Biden announced that Romania had met all security requirements and could join the program. The new rules were expected to be implemented around March 31.
🛑 However, just before the launch, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security suspended the process, and after additional review, completely canceled the country’s participation. The decision was explained as necessary to protect the program and the security of U.S. borders.
🤝 “We are grateful to Romania for its years of partnership in the security field. The opportunity for joining the program may be reconsidered in the future,” said Assistant Secretary Trisha McLaughlin.
📌 The Romanian government has already expressed readiness to continue cooperation with the U.S. and called on Washington to provide an explanation for the cancellation so that it can promptly address any concerns.
