📰 According to NBC News, U.S. officials noted that this is not a typical agreement for the purchase of natural resources. It is meant to serve as a way for Ukraine to reimburse the U.S. for billions of dollars in weapons and other support since the war began in February 2022.
💼 U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, presented President Volodymyr Zelensky with a draft agreement that included giving the U.S. 50% ownership of Ukraine’s rare earth minerals. This proposal was brought to Kyiv, according to sources.
❌ After the meeting, Bessent stated that the proposal reflects the goals of the U.S. administration, but he did not share additional details. Zelensky, in turn, declined to sign the document, saying he needed to study it and consult with lawyers.
⚖️ Zelensky also mentioned at the Munich Conference that his lawyers would evaluate the document and make necessary adjustments. He clarified that this was a memorandum, not a security agreement between the U.S. and Ukraine.
