⚖️ The Head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Andriy Pyshny, announced an initiative to rename the Ukrainian small coin. Parliament has already received proposals to change the name of kopecks to “shahky,” and there is support for this idea among MPs.

🔄 “We will still need to mint 50 kopecks for a while. But we want the next batch to be minted as ‘shahky’ instead of kopecks,” Pyshny stated.
🎨 However, the design for the “50 shahky” coin is not yet ready. The design development will begin after the Verkhovna Rada adopts the relevant decision on renaming.
🇺🇦 Why kopecks are being renamed: The NBU explains the initiative as a way to restore historical justice, promote de-Russification, and revive national traditions in Ukraine’s currency circulation. It was noted that the word “shahk” has ancient Ukrainian origins and was used in monetary counting from the 16th-17th centuries.
💡 At the same time, the ratio between “kopeck” and “shahk” will remain 1:1, and there will be no revaluation of the coins. There are no plans to exchange kopecks for shahky, and both coins will circulate in parallel. This will help avoid additional costs for kopeck disposal and the minting of new coins.
