During the meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized that China will “categorically not tolerate” Taiwan’s independence. According to him, both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to “one China,” and aspirations for independence undermine regional stability.

He also stressed that people on both sides of the strait are “one family” interested in peace, development, and cooperation.

After the talks, Cheng Li-wun stated that the Chinese side expressed respect for Taiwan’s social system and the lifestyle of its citizens. At the same time, she said Beijing expects Taiwan to recognize mainland China’s achievements in economic development.

The visit takes place amid increasing military pressure from China on the island, which Beijing considers its territory.
