🇱🇹 “We must deter, not flatter”: Lithuania’s president reacts to ideas of negotiations with Russia

🇱🇹 "Треба стримувати, а не підлабузнюватися": президент Литви відреагував на ідеї переговорів із Росією

The President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, stated that discussions about who should represent Europe in possible peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia ignore the real security needs of the European continent. He said this during a speech at the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in the Seimas of Lithuania.

Nausėda emphasized that Western leaders should not ignore where Europe’s security is currently being decided.

“Europe’s security is being decided in Ukraine. But first, Russia must be stopped. It must be deterred, not flattered. Repeated calls for engagement with Moscow do not reflect Europe’s security needs,” the Lithuanian president said.

He also stressed that the absence of strict and clear conditions for the Kremlin, as well as a lack of effective deterrence, could only encourage further Russian aggression.

At the same time, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas urged European countries to act cautiously. She emphasized that in discussions about possible negotiators, the EU must avoid a scenario in which Russia could promote a candidate favorable to its interests.
