Previously, the age-detection system was tested as part of a pilot project in Europe. The technology analyzes account data, published videos, and behavioral signals of the user to determine whether they may be a minor.
TikTok explained that if the system identifies an account as one that likely belongs to a child, the page will not be blocked automatically. The account will be additionally reviewed by specially trained moderators.
The company notes that it is introducing such measures amid inspections by European authorities, which are examining how online platforms comply with legislation on age verification and the protection of personal data.
