Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the country is officially joining the PURL initiative — a program for purchasing American weaponry for Ukraine. He made the statement before the start of the EU summit in Brussels.

According to Sánchez, the procurement of U.S. arms is part of a new NATO initiative launched a few weeks ago. He emphasized that Spain, as a committed member of the North Atlantic Alliance, supports the efforts of its partners to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
The Prime Minister also recalled that since his appointment, the Spanish government has gradually increased military spending, accusing the previous administration of failing to meet its defense obligations to allies.
“President Trump knows that since my appointment, we have not only fulfilled our commitments but also corrected the shortcomings of previous administrations. We have proven that Spain is a reliable NATO ally,” Sánchez stated.
Spain’s decision to join the PURL initiative marks another step in strengthening European support for Ukraine amid President Donald Trump’s new policy, which focuses aid to Kyiv on defense procurements through American companies.
