Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has signed a law that provides for the cancellation of overdue loans for participants in the war against Ukraine and their family members. This was reported by The Moscow Times.

According to the document, the provision applies to individuals who signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense starting from May 1 of the current year for a term of at least 12 months.
The total amount of debt eligible for write-off must not exceed 10 million rubles. Cancellation is only possible for loans taken before signing the contract and provided there is a court decision on debt recovery or an enforcement document.
Previously, similar benefits were introduced in autumn 2024, but they were more limited and applied to debts incurred before a specified date.
Russia also has a rule under which, in the event of a serviceman’s death or serious injury at the front, loan obligations may be terminated for both the soldier and their family members, regardless of when the contract was signed.
