🛡️ Poland is creating its own drone defense system without waiting for the EU

Poland plans to begin developing a national counter-drone system in the coming months without waiting for the implementation of the EU’s joint initiative known as the “drone wall.” Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk announced this in a comment to Bloomberg.

According to him, Warsaw supports the idea of strengthening air defense across the entire European Union but will first focus on its own national projects. In November, the Polish Ministry of Defense will announce investments in technologies for detecting, jamming, and neutralizing enemy drones as part of a broader air defense program.

Although the exact amount has not been disclosed, Tomczyk emphasized that at least half of the contracts should go to Polish companies. He noted that the EU initiative could later “complement” the national system.

The project is planned to be financed through the new EU defense credit program SAFE, under which Poland has already received the largest initial funding — €43.7 billion. The first components of the system could become operational three months after the official launch, with full readiness expected within two years.

“Anti-drone weapons must be comprehensive — combining sensors, effectors, and identification systems that work simultaneously to detect and neutralize threats,” Tomczyk explained.

He added that the new solutions will form another layer in Poland’s multi-tiered air defense system, which already includes long- and medium-range missile systems.
