This is the third Oscar in the 65-year-old actor’s career and his sixth nomination. He had previously received a BAFTA and the Screen Actors Guild Award for the same role, but did not attend those ceremonies either. Actors with three Oscars include Meryl Streep, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jack Nicholson, and Ingrid Bergman.

Since 2022, Sean Penn has repeatedly visited Ukraine, working on the documentary “Superpower,” dedicated to the Russian invasion. During one visit, he gifted one of his Oscar statuettes to President Volodymyr Zelensky, noting that the president could return it after Ukraine’s victory in the war.

Penn is known for his civic engagement and activism: from criticizing the Iraq War, helping victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, to founding the organization Core to support those affected by the Haiti earthquake. His civic stance dates back to the 1980s, and his father, Leo Penn, was blacklisted in Hollywood in the 1950s for refusing to cooperate with the House Committee on Un-American Activities.
