In his post on the social network X, he noted that the idea of the statement emerged a few days before the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and dictator Vladimir Putin, to which European leaders are not invited.
Orbán believes that the EU is trying to set conditions for an event in which it does not participate, which only complicates the situation. He also emphasized that attempts to tell others how to act could make things worse.
As an alternative, the Hungarian prime minister proposed holding an EU–Russia summit, similar to the dialogue between Washington and Moscow, adding: “Let’s give peace a chance.”
