European leaders are holding negotiations on a security guarantee mechanism for Ukraine that would oblige allies to respond promptly to a new Russian attack, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told Bloomberg.

According to the agency, the “NATO-light” format does not envisage the formal application of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty but requires countries that sign bilateral agreements with Kyiv to quickly coordinate steps in response to any aggression.
Among the possible measures are providing defense assistance, strengthening Ukraine’s army, economic support, and new sanctions against Russia. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto added that countries may take on individual commitments, while NATO’s deterrence will have the greatest effect.
