🇪🇺 Європа готує резервний план на випадок можливого виходу США з НАТО — WSJ

European countries have accelerated the development of a backup plan in case of a possible US withdrawal from NATO. The scenario involves European states being able to independently ensure their defense using the Alliance’s existing structures. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Officials working on the concept of a “European NATO” aim to strengthen the role of European countries within NATO command structures and complement American military resources with their own capabilities.

According to sources, these discussions are still informal — taking place during side talks and working meetings within NATO. At the same time, it is emphasized that this is not about creating an alternative to the Alliance, but rather about strengthening its European component.

European officials are focused on maintaining key security elements — deterrence of Russia, operational continuity, and nuclear deterrence — even in the event of a reduction or withdrawal of US forces from Europe.

The push to accelerate discussions was driven by statements from US President Donald Trump regarding a possible review of security policy, including ideas related to Greenland, which is part of Denmark — a NATO member. An additional factor was the refusal of some European countries to support US military operations against Iran.

Analysts also note a shift in Germany’s position. Under Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Berlin is increasingly seriously considering the need to strengthen European security autonomy amid a less predictable US policy.
