A Ukrainian skeleton athlete, who was barred from participating in the Olympic Games for wearing a “memorial helmet,” publicly called for Serhii Bubka to be stripped of the title Hero of Ukraine.

The athlete made this statement during a speech at the Verkhovna Rada. According to him, among Ukraine’s representatives in the international Olympic movement, there are individuals whose activities, in his opinion, contradict the interests of the state.
He emphasized that he is ashamed that Serhii Bubka still holds the title of Hero of Ukraine. The skeleton athlete accused him of supporting Russia, trading with the occupiers, and allowing Russian symbols in organizations associated with his activities.
The athlete also stressed that the title Hero of Ukraine is now often awarded posthumously — to people who gave their lives for the country — and therefore he considers it unacceptable that Bubka retains this title.
He also stated that a mechanism to strip Serhii Bubka of the title Hero of Ukraine could be the introduction of personal sanctions against him.
