Gilli emphasized that the United Kingdom’s role is not only to observe but to actively support Ukraine on the battlefield and in negotiations. He added that more than 200 British military planners, together with partners from the Coalition of the Willing, have been developing a detailed ceasefire plan over the past few months, and the multinational forces are “ready to act from day one.”
According to the minister, the deployment of British troops has two objectives: to reassure Ukrainians and to ensure security in the air, at sea, and on the ground, while simultaneously strengthening the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ ability to defend themselves. “The best means of deterring Russia is Ukraine’s ability to defend itself independently,” Gilli emphasized.
He also clarified that British troops will have the “right to defend themselves in case of an attack,” but did not disclose details of potential scenarios against Russia.
